DTP studentships

There are three types of studentships available through the SWBio DTP:

  • Standard DTP studentship
  • Standard DTP studentship with associate partner
  • CASE DTP studentship

They are all 4 year PhD programmes, and follow the format of a standard DTP studentship (as described within our ‘Programme‘ page).  Further details about these types of studentships are listed below.

Standard DTP studentship

  • Location: You will be mainly based at the university where the listed main supervisor is based.  For projects that will be mainly based at Rothamsted, the listed Rothamsted supervisor will be responsible for supervising you on a daily basis, and the academic supervisor will be responsible for monitoring your academic progress.
  • Registration: You will be registered with the university of the main supervisor.  For projects that will be hosted at Rothamsted, you will be registered at the collaborating university where the academic supervisor is based.

CASE DTP studentship

CASE (formerly known as ‘Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering’) studentships have an affiliated CASE partner.  This partner will be part of a company/organisation within either the private, public or civil society sectors.

  • Supervisor details: Each project has a main and second supervisor listed.  For projects that will be hosted at Rothamsted, a Rothamsted and academic supervisor will be listed instead.  There will also be a listed non-academic (CASE) supervisor.  This is whom you will be undertaking your CASE placement with.
  • Location: You will be mainly based at the institution where the listed main/Rothamsted supervisor is based.
  • Registration: You will be registered with the university of the main/academic supervisor.  For projects hosted at Rothamsted: The Rothamsted supervisor will be responsible for supervising you on a daily basis, but the academic supervisor will be responsible for monitoring your academic progress.
  • Placement: You will be required to undertake a placement with the CASE partner which will be for a minimum of 3 months and can take place at any stage during the PhD.  This placement will be directly related to your PhD project. It is optional to undertake a PIPS placement
  • Further details: Some CASE projects may also come with an enhanced stipend and additional support for the project.

Of note, some projects may involve fieldwork or time away from the listed host institution for e.g. time spent with others within your supervisory team, collaborating university, collaborator or on a CASE/PIPS placement. To find out further information, please contact the listed supervisor.
