Overview of PIPS organisation
Microferm Ltd is a leading manufacturer of biological silage additives with regulatory approval for bacterial strains used in its products as well as an active research program to find new strains for use in silage additives. In addition to silage additives, Microferm ltd also manufactures slurry treatment products, mycotoxin binders, crop protection products, vitamin drenches and electrolyte replacers. Products are sold under the Microferm brand or can be contract manufactured for customers own label products.
Placement offered | |
During the course of registering bacterial strains as feed additives Microferm was obliged to carry out whole genome analysis to ensure absence of undesirable genes for antimicrobial resistance. Microferm would like to examine the whole genome data for other, more desirable characteristics. These areas of interest include mycotoxin mitigation, bacteriocin production, beneficial metabolites. We are therefore looking for a student with experience of gene databases to examine the data for the genes associated with these desirable characteristics.
Person specification | |
Should be familiar with gene databases and have the ability to search out the correct gene names from literature searches in order to facilitate the gene searching. Any experience in bioinformatics would be of benefit to the applicant.
Financial contribution/benefit(s)
Up to £19,000 per annum (pro rata) to assist with expenses where necessary. |
